FISHING

The Missouri River is at an all time low.  With rock formations that make you really understand why that water swirls the way it does during normal flow.  And how the river stays in the channel as in why and where the rock dikes are located control the river to the point that is almost the way pavement controls highway traffic.  You also find out fast why you need a lot of tackle when you fish the river too.  With the rocks & brush snags now showing that are usually hidden underneath of the surface of the water.  Several of my friends & I reminisce about going out to regain our tackle lost from last summers fishing trips.  It's a nice thought but I would say its' not hardly worth it.

Hunting & Trapping

When I was growing up in Peru everyone I knew dabbled in trapping during the trapping season.  There were plenty of critters to cash in on and the pelt prices were worthwhile.  Locals either had hounds or trapped and both paid off fairly well.  I thought it was great when the fur buyer would take the animal whole where we wouldn't have to skin it.  But those days are over.  Not that there is any less critters around that's for sure.  But with the pelts pay back way down it is hardly worth doing unless you like something to do.  What has made it interesting in the last 10 years are the fairly large number of cats being caught by trapping and bagged by calling, then shooting.  And yes, there is a season for Bobcat in Nebraska.  It runs from December 1st to February 28th each year.  With no limit and you can hunt or trap them.  Unlike many of the other species that are trapped, their prices have stayed up there in the $100 dollar range for a bigger cat.  Since the reintroduction of the wild turkey in our area this comes the predators that prey on those animals.  Cats love birds and big cats love big birds.

This month's picture is Steve Adams from Peru with a big female bobcat that weighed well over 30 pounds.

No Open Season No Take No Take
Deer Season are coming and going it seems fast this year.  The muzzleloader season is now on and it has been pretty good weather to sit out in and stand and enjoy deer hunting instead of freezing your tail off.  I believe we go a pretty good kill in our area during the regular rifle season because I don't see near the deer traffic crossing the roads and highways.  The deer are really moving around this time of year and sometimes in the funniest places.  In someone's backyard, though a store front (we have that happen pretty often it seems), and basically any where that you don't usually see them only because they are in the breeding season and the bucks are wondering around looking for a willing doe.

This month's deer picture is taken in a parking lot - Nice Buck!

Archery open till December 31st

Muzzle Loader - opens December 1st through the 31st

Later Rifle (Season Choice Area 21) - opens January 1st thorugh the 9th

There are plenty of hunting season open right now.  You really need to get out and give it a try.  Remember I'm not an expert but I have my share of luck.  I wonder if the experts are having any lick today?  So until next time "Happy Hunting & Fishing."
