Fishing:
The Missouri River has been falling steadily
all month. Which does affect the fishing action. Normally
when the river is falling the fish don’t bite as often.
You really need to catch the river on the rise to have a lot
of action. But rise or fall Mellage Truck & Tractor, Inc.
Marine Division had their annual fish tournament, which brought
in quite a showing of fishermen. There were 25 teams completing
for the cash prize. With The Grand Prize Winner going to Norman
Tucker from Lincoln with a 33 pound, 10 ounce cat that was
worth $650.00. Not bad for a days fishing!
Basically some big fish are hitting on chubs
and gold fish while the smaller channel cats are hitting dough
bates, shad strips, and crawlers. The days & water are
getting cool and if you’re going to get some fishing
you best get out there. The musky smell of the river in the
fall is unmistakable and invigorating. It truly is my favorite
time of the year.
The picture for this issue shows the low river
level – notice the distance between the bottom of the
piling and the distance to the water. Usually the tops of
the piling are just protruding out of the water.
Hunting:
Bird Season opens November 6th this year and
it appears there are plenty of birds to harvest this year.
Though there seems to be a lot of pheasant around, my favorite
hunting is quail hunting. If you’ve ever tried it you’d
know why. Busting a covey with the dogs then hunting singles
is very satisfying, especially when the dogs are work well.
You’ll no doubt get plenty of shooting in and plenty
of walking. The dogs on a good day won’t want to stop
until they drop. After all they wait all year for the fall
hunting season. I don’t blame them I do too.
Limits this year:
• Pheasant -- 3 Bag (in the vest) & 12 possessions
(in the freezer)
• Quail -- 6 Bag (in the vest) & 24 possessions
(in the freezer).
Deer Rifle Season is just around the corner
and it’s time to sight in you rifle. The deer are really
moving around, as we have had a couple of frosts to bring
the doe’s into estrus. That and the farmers are having
a great year getting their crops out, it’s not hard
to see deer moving around picked fields most any evening.
Deer Seasons in our area are:
• Archery opened September 15th to November 12th &
November 22nd to December 31st
• Rifle (Blue Southeast) – opens November 13th
through 21st
• Muzzle Loader – opens December 1st through the
31st
• Later Rifle (Season Choice Area 21) – opens
January 1st through the 9th
