If variety is what you’re after, you’ll love the Sandhills
Journey Scenic Byway, dubbed one of the 10 most scenic routes in
the United States. The beauty here is a direct result of the
dramatically changing terrain. From abundant fields of corn and
the gently rolling hills of cattle country to sandhills splendor
and plentiful marshes and wetlands, the topography here is
uniquely captivating. Pheasant, grouse, quail, and deer thrive
amongst the subtle beauty of the area.
On the byway’s eastern end, experience one of nature’s
most amazing spectacles—the annual sandhill crane migration. For
millions of years, more than 500,000 sandhill cranes have
descended upon this region of the Platte River Valley. It occurs
each spring from late February to early April and draws
spectators and wildlife lovers from around the world.
Another rare feature of this byway is the nation’s largest
hand-planted forest. The dream of a University of Nebraska
botanist, the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey encompasses
nearly 20,000 acres of hand-planted pines and cedars. Take some
time to enjoy the unique surroundings with a leisurely hike or a
picnic in the woods.
Beyond wildlife and scenery, the Sandhills Journey Scenic
Byway offers an abundance of Western history beautifully
displayed in a variety of museums and historic buildings. Be
sure to stop at the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer in Grand
Island, the Custer County Museum in Broken Bow, and the Knight
Museum in Alliance to experience the rich heritage of days gone
by.
From the past to the present, the Sandhills Journey is
alive with a wide range of attractions. Enjoy art galleries,
community theatre, golf courses, water fun, and shopping among
others. |
